Halifax based saxophonist-band leader James Shaw and his 16 piece Vesuvius Big Band released their first album, Live at Open Waters Festival, on July 19th, 2021. Shaw pushes the boundaries of big band jazz with his reinterpretation of standards, meticulous treatment of Wayne Shorter compositions and original material. Shaw replaces the shout chorus' of the past with distorted guitar solos and trashy drums grooves.

Venturing through Shaw's melting kaleidoscopic vision you will hear his wide array of influences, such as Romantic expressionism, 1960's free jazz, indie rock and 20th century modern classical. Their first outing, a daring statement from the Vesuvius Big Band, features many of Halifax's finest talents, including pianist Breagh MacKinnon, saxophonists Chris Mitchell and Colin Harnish, trombonist Andrew Jackson, and many more. This recording delivers a compelling narrative; from beautiful ballads to climatic chaos. This is not your traditional swing band.
